News - Reunion 2010

The Shifferd Family Reunion this year was a great success - Thanks Phil and Joan for having us all over to your home.  A few photos here show some of the fun we were having.  Please send us any other photos for your family pages or of the reunion to share with others & we'll appreciate your happy faces.  Please give us UPDATES or CORRECTIONS for the family tree People, Dates, Children, Weddings, Passing Dates, New Births, Anniversaries & Birthdays.

John Shifferd I was the 5th son of Samuel & Charlotte Shifferd of Handsworth, Yorkshire, England.
Samuel was a coal miner, born about 1813 & John Shifferd born about 1850, according to the 1861 England Census, showing Samuel to be 48 & John to be 11 at that time, Seven sons with wife Charlotte 45, George 18, William 17, Joshua 16, John 11, Samuel 12, Joseph 9, Henry 7

Previous records show Henry Shifferd to be born 1790.  We're not going to check any further back, as if there were war records, we might have had redcoats fighting against the forefathers of our great land - The Proud, The Free, Americans, even though we did invade a country, kill off it's people - then, we made laws that said it was OK, we wanted this land for our land.

OK, now fess up !!! Who voted for this man for President?
Somebody did, as he got elected.
My response to the President Nov. 1, 2009 (his message follows this response):

Dear Mr. President,
Thank you for your message‏

As ordinary Americans, we expect great things from our leaders. It is not entitlements we want, just what we have earned, information about what our government is doing with our tax dollars and where we stand on expecting to see your promised changes. An important policy may be to try to provide clarity about what impact you strive for, or hope to accomplish with the many issues now facing our nation. It was appreciated that you and your cabinet volunteered to provide a perspective that the economy was improving, even in the face of massive job losses and depressed industries. This helped Wall Street reflect improvements, based on your speculation, briefly turning stock prices upward.

Now, we are faced with the same issues we struggled with at the beginning of your term. Believing that more financing would enable our country to become stronger, it seemed like investments were needed. Since then we have not seen improvements in banking, financing, reinstating needed regulations or new plans for improvements. Please let us know what improvements have been made with our investment.

We have heard about the need for changes in health care insurance reform. We did get your message about how your mother struggled with forms and insurers when she was sick, but we have not seen any meaningful regulations for insurance companies, that even they confirm is needed, so they will not take advantage of people needing care. We do understand Medicare & Medicaid fraud takes a reported $60 Billion from our government, as you cannot control costs as well as even a corrupt insurer. Our medical care is second to none in the World, but the cost needs to be monitored. Those from other countries risk their lives to be in America, while those with money pay the exorbitant fees for medical care here. Please get laws that help control the insurance we are now paying for and stop the waste from fraud.

Going to the wrong country to fight a war was not under your watch. Getting us out of countries not wanting us and of no benefit to any of us is a difficult decision that we hope you can make. Our military has the capability to withdraw, but their mentality is to continue to fight, as they are trained. They can serve our country better defending us in peace rather than trying to inflict our views on the World.

Believing in a strong America, it may be time for us to know how education, industry, energy, banking and defense all can benefit from strong clear policies. Please share with us what is being done to improve America.

Dear Friend:

Thank you for sharing your thoughts with me. I have heard
from countless Americans struggling to afford health insurance and
health professionals striving to provide care. I appreciate your
perspective.

There is broad consensus among the American people on
the need for affordable, high-quality health care. The rising cost of
health care is the most pressing financial challenge for families and
for our Nation, and controlling this cost is essential to bringing
down the Federal deficits we inherited. We must end unfair
insurance practices that leave millions of Americans without
coverage, denying them access to care, and exposing them to
extraordinary burdens. And we should ensure that all small
business employees have access to affordable, high-quality health
plans so that we can make our economy--and our small businesses-
-more competitive. Now is the time to move forward, and I am
working to get health insurance reform done this year.

Since I took office, we have done more to improve health
care than we have in the previous decade. In February, I signed
H.R. 2 to provide coverage for millions of children through the
Children's Health Insurance Program, and I signed the American
Recovery and Reinvestment Act to make key investments in
computerized medical records and preventive services.

Still, more must be done to lower costs, expand coverage,
and improve the quality of health care. My 2010 Budget makes a
major down payment on health insurance reform by implementing
efficiencies in government health care spending while improving
the quality of care. To help fulfill the debt we owe to our service
men and women, it includes the largest proposed single-year
increase in veterans funding in 30 years. It expands health care
coverage to an additional 500,000 veterans by 2013, implements
technology that eases the transition from military care to veterans'
care, and enhances screening and treatment services for those
suffering from Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder and Traumatic
Brain Injury.

Looking forward, there are tough choices to be made, and I
will seek to bring employers and workers, health care providers
and patients, and Democrats and Republicans together to create a
system that delivers better care and puts the Nation on a
sustainable, long-term fiscal path. To learn more about my agenda
or to share a personal story, please join me online at:
www.healthreform.gov. For further information on health care and
assistance that may be available to you, you may call 1-800-
FEDINFO or visit: www.usa.gov.

I share the sense of urgency that millions of Americans have
voiced. I watched as my ailing mother struggled with stacks of
insurance forms in the last moments of her life. This is not who
we are as a Nation; together, we will fix it.

Sincerely,

Barack Obama
